about

"This recording is about Sonny, because of Sonny, and for Sonny."
Dylan Cramer

2011 marks my 40th year as an alto saxophonist. During that time, I have listened to and appreciated many great artists on the instrument, players such as Charlie Parker, Paul Desmond, and Johnny Hodges. However, without a doubt my biggest influence has been Sonny Criss.
In 1977 I headed down to Los Angeles to meet Sonny. I was very fortunate to become his student for the next eight months. Then, suddenly and tragically, on November 19, 1977, Sonny Criss committed suicide, and, while the jazz world lost one of its most phenomenal players, I lost an idol, a brother, and a friend.
Although it took me a long time to get over Sonny’s death, I decided, some 20 years later, to do a recording in his honor. For the recording I chose five of Sonny’s original compositions along with five other songs he recorded during his prolific career.
He was a brilliant saxophonist, and a kind, honest man, and I will never forget him.
Dylan Cramer

"As did Criss, Cramer plays the alto using clean, vigorous lines, often of breathtaking technical brilliance… Dylan Cramer has a song to sing and knows how to sing it."
Coda Magazine

"Dylan Cramer has absorbed the blues-rich Criss sound into his own appealing style… An engaging set by a fine alto player. Dylan Cramer is a talent worth seeking out."
Jazz 52nd Street

"Cramer sounds the way one might imagine Stan Getz would have sounded if he had swapped his tenor for an alto." Scotland On Sunday

"Dylan Cramer's interpretations are pensive and intriguing throughout… This is good jazz that deserves as much respect as it gives." The Jazz Review

In memory of William Mansfield Turner, better known to the world as Sonny Criss.
